Micro-camera for hyperspectral imaging for in-vivo probing
Host institution/company
Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork (Ireland)
Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels and Paul Galvin, Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork.

Pietro Panizza, Ospedale San Raffaele s.r.l., Milan, Italy
Type of contract
36-months full-time research grant within the PHAST-ETN project
Brief description of the project
The Biophotonics@Tyndall team that was formed recently and has gained a lot of recognition already. The team is specializing in fundamental and translational research in biophotonics and has established strong industrial collaboration projects.
Many of the ongoing clinical studies focus on label-free optical spectroscopy and imaging. The present project is about developing an integrated hyperspectral micro-camera system including microLED illumination sources, advanced image processing capabilities and packaging compatible with surgical and/or endovascular applications.
Applications include the field of bronchoscopy, as a satellite device to the main bronchoscope for imaging close to the alveoli, to facilitate early detection of endobronchial cancers, and smart surgical tool for tumour removal for applications in breast cancer.

Planned secondments at Grintech AB (Germany), Philips N.V. (Netherlands), Ospedale San Raffaele s.r.l. (Italy), Horiba Jobin Yvon S.A.S. (France) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy).
Applicants should hold or expect to attain, as a minimum an MSc in Electronics, Optical Engineering or Photonics, Physics, Bioengineering or related area.
Knowledge and Experience
A demonstrated knowledge of at least two of the following: photonics, electromagnetic fields, optical sensing, spectroscopy, lasers, optical fibers, bioengineering, data analysis or control of instrumentation.

Research project carried out in at least one of the above disciplines.
